What is Markup?

Definition

Markup is profit expressed as a percentage of cost, calculated as price minus cost, divided by cost.

Formula

Margin = (price - cost) / price; Markup = (price - cost) / cost

Why it matters

A product costing 60 dollars and sold at 100 dollars has a markup of 66.7 percent. Markup is always larger than margin for a profitable product, so convert before comparing.
