How to get your brand cited by ChatGPT

The short answer

To get cited by ChatGPT, publish pages that answer specific buyer questions in the first sentence, back claims with named sources, and keep your brand facts consistent across the web. Make sure crawlers can read the page as plain HTML, since many AI crawlers do not run JavaScript.

Key takeaways
  • Allow AI crawlers in robots.txt and serve content as HTML.
  • Answer one question per page, near the top.
  • Earn mentions on third-party sites that engines already trust.

Let the crawlers in

Check that robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot and ChatGPT-User if you want to appear. A blocked bot cannot retrieve your page, whatever its quality.

Then confirm that the main text appears in the raw HTML. Open the page source and look for your answer. If it is missing, the page depends on scripts that many crawlers skip.

Write for retrieval

Engines retrieve passages, not whole pages. Put the direct answer under the heading, then add detail below it. Use tables for comparisons and lists for steps.

In our prompt tests, pages with a named figure in the opening answer were cited more often than pages with general claims.

Build mentions beyond your site

Engines weigh what others say about you. Listings on review sites, answers on Q&A communities and references in trade publications all add signals.

Keep your company description identical everywhere. Consistency helps engines treat the mentions as one entity.

Measure with a fixed prompt set

Choose 30 prompts that match buyer questions. Run them monthly and log whether your brand is mentioned, cited or linked. A fixed set is the only fair way to see change.
